Visit Local Landmarks

Journey through time when you visit historic battlefields and landmarks that make SanteeCooper Country special. The region is home to significant Revolutionary War sites such as Fort Fair Lawn, Eutaw Springs Battlefield and the Swamp Fox Murals Trail. Not to mention the rich stories that come with locations like Mepkin Abbey and the Santee National Wildlife Refuge in Summerton.

These sites offer visitors a chance to explore pivotal moments in America's fight for independence, with well-preserved battlefields and landmarks that bring our history to life. Be sure to pack your camera to snap photographs of the sites along the way. We also suggest bringing a water bottle and supportive walking shoes for all your outdoor adventures.

Something About Taste

Next, indulge in a savory meal from the Barony House in Moncks Corner. You could even see a local monck from Moncks Corner dining there at the same time!

Meet People of the Past

A great way to connect with the past is to learn about people who lived through the American Revolution. We all know of the famous faces on the battlefield–General Francis Marion, Colonel William Moultrie, General Nathanael Greene and more, but we encourage you to get to know civilians whose lives were forever changed by the war.

Take for example, Tony Small. Small was a formerly enslaved man who played a significant role in the life of Irish aristocrat Lord Edward FitzGerald. After the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781, Small found him severely wounded and nursed him back to health. Grateful for his care, FitzGerald offered Small his freedom and made him his personal assistant.

Small accompanied FitzGerald to Ireland, where he became well-known in Dublin, living with the FitzGerald family. They remained close, even after FitzGerald became involved in the Irish independence movement and was ultimately captured and killed in 1798. Small later relocated to London with his wife, occasionally keeping in touch with FitzGerald’s widow. While Small may not be the first figure you recall when thinking of those who played a part in the American Revolution, he was one of the many faces that makeup the history of South Carolina during the war.
